INEEL METHOD MANUAL FOR THE AMCHITKA ENVIRONMENTAL SAMPLE ANALYSIS
(Rev 1)

Department of Chemistry
Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory
Idaho Falls, Idaho
December 2004

Summary of Contents

This INEEL Method Manual for the Amchitka Environmental Sample Analysis contains INEEL methods/ procedures selected for the analysis of Amchitka samples by the INEEL, as listed herein.

The methods/ procedures include both Analytical Chemistry Laboratory Procedures (ACLP) and Analytical Chemistry Method Manuals (ACMM) for the Analytical Chemistry Department. The quality control requirements for the methods are described in each method procedure. General quality assurance (QA) requirements are described in the QA manual, PLN-153, " Quality Assurance Project Plan for Analytical Laboratories Department Radioanalytical Activities," as supplemented by PLN-1719, "Quality Assurance Project Plan for the Analysis of Amchitka Island Samples". Training, Instrument Quality Control, Sample Chain-of-Custody, Analytical Quality Control, Data Quality Control, Document Control, and Records Management are all described in this QA manual.

The reporting of data for the Amchitka project from INEEL is agreed upon with the responsible CRESP members and the INEEL, as defined in the related Statement of Work.

CONTENTS
The selected INEEL procedures/methods for the Amchitka project are listed below:

Revision 1 Link

GAMMA SPECTROSCOPY

2. EVALUATION AND VERIFICATION OF DATA FOR RADIONUCLIDE IDENTIFICATION/SELECTION - ACLP-10.31-Revision 0 Link

3 . RML GERMANIUM AND LEPS DETECTOR CALIBRATION - ACLP-10.41- Revision 1 Link

(A project-specific field change will be issued to add "and 125 ml poly bottle" in A., in Section 2, at the end of the paragraph beginning with, "Appropriate sample containers approved for use with this method are")

ALPHA SPECTROSCOPY AND BETA COUNTING

5. DETERMINATION OF SELECTED ACTINIDES AND STRONTIUM-90 IN WATER - ACMM-3815 - Revision 0 Link

6. DETERMINATION OF SELECTED ACTINIDE NUCLIDES AND STRONTIUM-90 IN FILTERS AND SOLIDS - ACMM-3816 - Revision 1 Link

7. DETERMINATION OF SELECTED ACTINIDES AND SR-90 IN SOIL AND VEGETATION-ACMM-3804 - Revision 1 Link

NOTE: The actinide procedure for small solid sample sizes is ACMM-3816 and large sample sizes are ACMM-3804. Strontium-90 procedure is common for ACMM-3804, ACMM-3816 and ACMM-3815 after the initial strontium sulfate separation. Section 7.9 of ACMM-3815 will be used for all three procedures after the initial strontium sulfate separation. Section 7.9 will continue for Sr-90 analysis after step 7.10.8 of ACMM 3816 and step 7.12.6 of ACMM-3804. For biological samples, the strontium sulfate precipitation with 10% Li2SO4 with pH adjustment is recommended twice to reduce calcium interference (Step 7.9.7 to 7.9.8).

INDUCTIVELY COUPLED PLASMA - MASS SPECTROSCOPY (ICP-MS)

8. DETERMINATION OF 99Tc IN BIOLOGICAL SAMPLES USING TEVA® RESIN - ACMM-3705 - Revision 0 Link

9. ANALYSIS OF ISOTOPIC PLUTONIUM AND URANIUM USING INDUCTIVELY COUPLED PLASMA-MASS SPECTROMETRY - ACMM-3710 - Revision 0 (in development)
