Review Areas and Ad hoc Support Overview

CRESP Review Areas

CRESP will, at the request of DOE, organize and lead independent technical reviews (CRESP reviews) of DOE projects. CRESP also will provide independent reviewers from academia and otherwise non-affiliated experts to participate in reviews organized by or on behalf of DOE. All participants of CRESP reviews and reviewers provided by CRESP will have appropriate academic and/or experience credentials that establish them as national or international experts in their designated fields. Furthermore, to preserve the essential independence of CRESP activities, DOE may suggest, but not select, reviewers or teams for CRESP reviews. CRESP shall provide DOE HQ with drafts of all reviews in a timely manner.

Examples of CRESP reviews include the following:

  • Restart unfiltered ventilation using the 700C fan at WIPP
  • Plutonium Finishing Plant (PFP) Demolition Resumption Expert Panel Charter
  • Remedy Selections and Evaluations at multiple sites.
  • Performance Assessment and closure plan reviews and support (e.g., ORP, Waste Management Area C including C-tank farm, Waste Management Area A-AX including A & AX tank farms; Integrated Disposal Facility (IDF); Hanford Composite Analysis; SRS Performance Assessment and Supplemental Analysis for Saltstone Disposal Facility)
  • ORP System Plan software assumptions and modeling evaluation
  • Safety Reviews (e.g., WIPP, West Valley, SRS waste processing)
  • Portsmouth Environmental Reports
  • Risk Communication for Portsmouth Detection of Np-247 at Public School
  • Oak Ridge Fish Study on Radionuclide Uptake
  • Grout Fact Sheet
  • Risk Communication Workshop for SSAB Chair Meeting
  • ATSDR & IRIS documentation on PFAS
  • Peer-review of Energy Solutions PA and license agreement for Federal Cell at Clive, UT disposal facility for disposal of Savannah’s depleted uranium stockpile
  • Applicability of nuclear safety systems graded approach to cyber security
  • Evaluation of survey of Jana School cleanup criteria

Current Ad hoc Projects

CRESP may add additional ad hoc activities upon request by EM or sites.  Depending on the magnitude of the request, supplemental funding may be required.

  • Groundwater Endpoints Strategy Development (in conjunction with SRNL, April Kluever, Charles Denton POC)
  • Review of the TRAC database (in conjunction with Moab, SRS, Hanford, and ETEC, April Kluever, Charles Denton POC)
  • Creating an end-state vision for the management of complex plumes (e.g. I-129 Plume) (in conjunction with SRS and Hanford, April Kluever, Charles Denton POC)
  • On-going risk communications support associated PORTs (Yvette Cantrell, Charles Denton POC)
  • Collaboration with the IAEA working group on final covers for LLW disposal facilities (Justin Marble, Scott Bartel POC)
  • Collaboration with IAEA to prepare draft guidance on disposal of irradiated graphite (Justin Marble, Scott Bartel POC)
